The FG Knot For Fishing Fast And Easy Method

In the fishing world, the FG knot is known as the strongest braid to leader knot. The abbreviation “FG” means “fine grip.” The knot works very much like a Chinese finger trap. The braided fishing line weaves back and forth around a monofilament or fluorocarbon leader line about twenty times to create an ultra slim connection. When the braid is pulled very hard around the mono or fluoro it actually digs into the leader line a bit to form a locking effect, very much like the Chinese finger trap. There are many different methods people use to tie this particular knot. The one in the video below is know as the no tension method.

The steps to tying the no tension FG knot are very simple.

  1. Cross the main braid over the leader line, literally creating a cross. The union of the lines should leave about three inches of line on the leader tag end and ten inches of line on the braid tag end. That intersection where the lines meet should be pinched with the thumb and pointer finger.
  2. Begin by wrapping the main braid line under the leader and around it to create a tight loop around and gently pull the braid to under the pinched fingers. Then take the tag end of the braided line and loop it around the leader line from underneath and lock it under the pinched fingers as well. Continue alternating between wrapping the main braid and tag end braid around the leader until ten coils of each have been completed.
  3. Once there are a total of twenty wraps around the mono or fluorocarbon leader tie two half hitch knots around the main braid and tag end of the leader line, tying them “together”. Cinch those knots down extra tight to the FG coils that were created in step two.
  4. Grab the main lines of the leader and braided fishing line and pull with excessive force to lock the braid coils into place on the leader. This is a very critical step in the process of tying an FG knot. If the coils are not locked in super tight to the leader line the knot will fail.
  5. Trim the tag end of the monofilament or fluorocarbon leader off right up flush with the braided line.
  6. Tie two alternating half hitch knots around the main braid.
  7. Cut the tag of the braid off
  8. Double and triple check the knot to ensure it is not going to fail.
  9. Optional, add a very small amount of Super Glue to the hitch knots

This method of tying the FG knot is supposed to be the easiest of all the others. In the above steps please note that number six can be done several different ways in order to fully secure the knot. There is a method known as the Rizzuto Finish that’s a bit more involved to tie than the half hitch method, but yields good results. Youtube has hundreds of videos on how to tie the Fine Grip knot for fishing, but the one in this video, to me anyway, is the easiest way to tie an FG knot that I’ve ever tried.
